Why Floyd Gets Paid

This is one of the better interviews I’ve seen on ESPN in a while. They both roll off each other with some good banter. Floyd’s only concern being money has always annoyed me, and I guess it’s because guys who love the sport more than him and work harder and do it for peanuts, just aren’t as gifted as he is. And Floyd knows this and uses it as a great way to sell. This is why he gets paid. The guy tries so hard to make bullshit taste great that it becomes annoying to you, so you buy it just to see if he’s telling the truth, all the while hoping you catch him in his lie so you can shut him up by telling him you were right all along, that bullshit really does taste bad. Sucker. I only know because it takes one to know one. Let’s hope we get to see Manny and Floyd fight, it would be a absolute crime if this didn’t happen.

UFC Events on the Xbox 360…?

So today I was reading about the replay of UFC 98 being offered in HD on the Xbox 360.  Pretty cool.  But that still isn’t enough to make me go online with my Xbox 360.  However, if they let you order the event live in HD, then I’m all over it.  Where we’re currently at, we can’t order the UFC in HD.  Our BrightHouse location doesn’t offer it.  I hope Microsoft and the UFC can do this because it would be nice to finally see a live UFC event in HD here.  I mean, after all I’ve seen every other mom and pop event in HD on HDnet, but the biggest and baddest MMA organization on the planet can’t be as easy to obtain in HD…?  WTF?  Please Microsoft, work with the UFC to bring live events in HD on my damn Xbox.

Dear Don

Don Frye is the man and his “Dear Don” segments were the only thing that the IFL had worth a damn. I’m surprised nobody else has picked this up… Sherdog? Affliction? Somebody, please. Pay Don some money and have him do these for you.  Your fan base will expand overnight, by at least one person.

Some Awesome Thoughts on Recent News

Frank Trigg Returns to the UFC?
Frank Trigg has signed a four fight deal with the UFC.  His last stint didn’t turn out too well, but I think he may do a little better this time around as he’s worked on his game a little since then.  While I don’t expect him to get the title, I think he can get some good wins.  What are some good matchups for him now?  Koscheck?  Fitch?  Alves?  Either way, I dig it as I have always liked Trigg.  I have good memories of him and Ryan Bennett on MMA Weekly’s radio show everyday at work during lunch.  It was the best radio show at the time.  And he helped create two of my favorite fights of all time, both with Hughes.  But I have to ask… why did the UFC sign him?  Possible fights with Hughes and GSP again?  I would rather see him fight some others in the division.  It just seems like an odd signing to me, but I like it.

Rashad Evans and Quinton Jackson as TUF Coaches
Even though I’m really looking forward to these two throwing down, I don’t care for them being TUF coaches at all.  Any time guys have to be coaches, it always takes way too long before they actually fight.  They really need to figure out a way to keep TUF from fucking shit up.  However, it probably helps build up some heat for the fight and at least this time we don’t have to put the title on hold.  Belt holders should never be coaches.

Affliction’s Trilogy
Affliction has announced their third show, calling it “Trilogy”.  How clever.  But the event is shaping up to be another fun card, including Tim Sylvia fighting Paul Buentello (a fight the UFC should of put on years ago).  A couple of other good matchups are Paul Daley versus Jay Hieron and Chris Horodecki fighting Dan Lauzon.  Both of those fights should be entertaining.  Of course there is also the main event, where I have been taking a lot of heat from my friends about because I don’t care for this fight that much at all.  It’s Fedor versus Barnett.  I just don’t think much of Josh Barnett these days.  Really, I never thought much of him before.  He’s a good fighter, but I just don’t ever care to see this guy fight.  Oh well, I’ll be watching the event regardless and a Fedor fight is always worth watching.  I only hope that Affliction can stay in the business of promoting MMA events and not suffer the fate of all the other organizations that wanted to topple the UFC (which is where they went wrong to begin with).

Shogun Fighting for the Belt
The latest rumblings about Machida’s next fight (and title defense) is whether Mauricio “Shogun” Rua deserves it or not.  I say, probably not.  But he was once regarded the best in the division and like Chuck Liddell, deserves a little credit for accomplishing such acclaim.  Whether he deserves the shot or not, I think this fight will be a good one and end before the bell… unfortunately for Shogun.  I just don’t see him getting past Machida the Karate Man (who only bruises on the inside).  Awarding guys shots at the title based on popularity and old merits is nothing new for MMA fans.  It’s nothing new to boxing fans either.  Just sometimes, it so transparent that we can’t help to point it out.

Forum Fishing for Funnies

You don’t come to this blog for the same old and regurgitated news and rumors.  And I don’t have the credentials to get that kind of inside info on my own.  What I can do, is lurk all the forums for crazy and odd shit so you don’t have to, and there is no doubt this one is a winner.  I can see this thing making it’s rounds on the interweb for years to come.  Kudos to the author (?) of this gif, hilarious stuff!  The animated gif can be found after the jump, as it was a bit big in file size to be posting here on the front page. The Ultimate Farcer

TUF ENUF

So at the end of each episode we get to see a glimpse of the following week.  And as they get ready to start the semifinals, it showed a clip of Dana trying to convince the coaches into matching the teammates against each other.  Obviously this was to ensure a “US vs UK” finale, because afterall, this entire season would essentially be bust if one country was beaten before the show was over.  It also showed both Henderson and Bisping opposing the idea.  They didn’t like it at all.  So, do you think Dana will get his way?  This whole thing reminds me of how Pride used to run their GP’s in Japan, making sure the match they wanted to see in the finals happened.

Fedor vs Barnett Confirmed?

That’s what Brian Oswald over at MMAmania.com is reporting.  Even though I will be watching this fight, it’s not really the fight I’ve been wanting to see Fedor in.  I think a fight with Lesnar would be huge.  Or even a fight with Randy or one of the other top heavyweight’s in the UFC like Frank Mir, Gabriel Gonzaga, or even Shane Carwin.  For some reason, Josh just doesn’t hold my interest much these days.  His performance in his latest fight with Gilbert Yvel during Affliction’s second outing was lackluster and he just didn’t seem motivated at all.  That could be because he’s been bored and maybe this will light a fire under him.  Either way, I hope this fight lives up to the hype it seems to be getting from the hardcore fans on the forums because  I just don’t feel it.

Strikeforce on June 6th

Just a quick reminder, there is another killer Strikeforce event coming up, June 6th on Showtime. Strikeforce really has done a great job over the past few years of building a decent following as well as a great brand. Their events have always come off as quality and you can tell Scott Coker (CEO) not only has a clue, but he has a clear vision and a successful business model. In the business world of MMA, that’s a tough thing to accomplish. I look forward to what happens with them and Showtime over the next couple of years (and hopefully it erases all memories of Elite XC and the Shaws).

Thoughts on the Stupid Hulk Tournament

dream 9

Well, if the match making and the marketing for the Super Hulk Tournament didn’t prove that the event was a bit of a farce, then the execution and result should of drove that point home.  It was exactly as advertised, ridiculous and entertaining.  The Minowa/Sapp fight came off scripted, as did Sokoudjou’s late peppering of Jan “The Giant” after the ref tried to call the fight.  As for Choi’s fight with washed up baseball star Jose Conseco, it was a complete joke.  But who was really expecting anything more?  That being said, the rest of the event was decent and had some quality matchups as it was the continuation of the Featherweight GP.  The upset of the night had to be “Kid” getting decisioned by Joe Warren (who?) in a fight that was close and had some good moments.  Neither guy seemed to truly dominate, but I felt Joe was more aggressive and was able control where the fight went most of the time.  And to think, Kid was given a free shot to the second round and an opponent he was expected to beat.  How will this be interpreted by the MMA media here in the states?  Will they even care?  Should they?  The main event featuring (MTV’s Bully Beatdown host) Jason “Mayhem” Miller versus Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza was a rematch that ended up being a huge buzz kill.  Shit happens sometimes, and in MMA we all know it’s coming.  They will now have to meet again after the fight was stopped because of a cut received by Souza from an illegal kick to the head courtesy of Mayhem.  Overall, the event was average and worth checking out but I’m still left wanting.

Some Sober Thoughts After UFC 98

Now that my head is a bit more clear, I wanted to post some quick thoughts from watching UFC 98 this past weekend:

- Machida is one of the best, his performance was a huge stamp on the division.

- Rashad looked lost in there. His KO’d face was scary, we thought he was dead.

- Who’s next for Machida? I don’t see anyone beating him right now. Maybe… Randy? I think that’s an interesting match up, if he would come back to the division.

- Where does Rampage fit in? I still want see Rampage/Rashad.

- Sherk just always seems too short, he just can’t reach the target.

- Hughes/Serra was a big pile of letdown. Massive, steaming piles.

- Drew McFredries and Professor X was a slugfest, as expected. I would like to see Wanderlei and Drew throwdown.

- I’m still not sold on Krzysztof Soszynski.

- The ad for UFC 99 had no mention of Crocop. I don’t remember Joe or Goldie mentioning him either, but I was a little drunk… anyone?

- I’m still not excited for the Rich/Wanderlei fight and I don’t like this catchweight crap. Weak.

- I should of bought more Guinness.

Oh, and I almost forgot about Chael Sonnen’s fight. Now that I think about it, I wish I could forget about that fight because it was about as fun to watch as it would of been to drop hot coals on my testicles.
