Some Awesome Thoughts on Recent News

Frank Trigg Returns to the UFC?
Frank Trigg has signed a four fight deal with the UFC.  His last stint didn’t turn out too well, but I think he may do a little better this time around as he’s worked on his game a little since then.  While I don’t expect him to get the title, I think he can get some good wins.  What are some good matchups for him now?  Koscheck?  Fitch?  Alves?  Either way, I dig it as I have always liked Trigg.  I have good memories of him and Ryan Bennett on MMA Weekly’s radio show everyday at work during lunch.  It was the best radio show at the time.  And he helped create two of my favorite fights of all time, both with Hughes.  But I have to ask… why did the UFC sign him?  Possible fights with Hughes and GSP again?  I would rather see him fight some others in the division.  It just seems like an odd signing to me, but I like it.

Rashad Evans and Quinton Jackson as TUF Coaches
Even though I’m really looking forward to these two throwing down, I don’t care for them being TUF coaches at all.  Any time guys have to be coaches, it always takes way too long before they actually fight.  They really need to figure out a way to keep TUF from fucking shit up.  However, it probably helps build up some heat for the fight and at least this time we don’t have to put the title on hold.  Belt holders should never be coaches.

Affliction’s Trilogy
Affliction has announced their third show, calling it “Trilogy”.  How clever.  But the event is shaping up to be another fun card, including Tim Sylvia fighting Paul Buentello (a fight the UFC should of put on years ago).  A couple of other good matchups are Paul Daley versus Jay Hieron and Chris Horodecki fighting Dan Lauzon.  Both of those fights should be entertaining.  Of course there is also the main event, where I have been taking a lot of heat from my friends about because I don’t care for this fight that much at all.  It’s Fedor versus Barnett.  I just don’t think much of Josh Barnett these days.  Really, I never thought much of him before.  He’s a good fighter, but I just don’t ever care to see this guy fight.  Oh well, I’ll be watching the event regardless and a Fedor fight is always worth watching.  I only hope that Affliction can stay in the business of promoting MMA events and not suffer the fate of all the other organizations that wanted to topple the UFC (which is where they went wrong to begin with).

Shogun Fighting for the Belt
The latest rumblings about Machida’s next fight (and title defense) is whether Mauricio “Shogun” Rua deserves it or not.  I say, probably not.  But he was once regarded the best in the division and like Chuck Liddell, deserves a little credit for accomplishing such acclaim.  Whether he deserves the shot or not, I think this fight will be a good one and end before the bell… unfortunately for Shogun.  I just don’t see him getting past Machida the Karate Man (who only bruises on the inside).  Awarding guys shots at the title based on popularity and old merits is nothing new for MMA fans.  It’s nothing new to boxing fans either.  Just sometimes, it so transparent that we can’t help to point it out.
