Thoughts on UFC 99
Well, UFC 99 just ended and it was OK. Nothing great, but not bad at all. We generally enjoyed it here even though there were some snoozer fights. During those moments, a handful of us would wander into the other room where we had Miguel Cotto’s fight on HBO. But now that UFC 99 is done, it has left me thinking…
1.) Rich and Wanderlei put on a great fight. Really enjoyed it. Both guys had their moments, and it was close to going either way, but in the end Rich earned the win and everyone in the house here seemed to agree.
2.) Crocop won his fight back, but not without the usual controversy that seem to follow his matches lately. An eye poke by him leaves his win a little bit stained. A bit wanting. I don’t think it would of changed the outcome though. We all felt Crocop was starting to find his way as the fight went on.
But now it appears Crocop may be burning Dana, the UFC, and his fans by leaving the UFC for Japan. That’s right, it’s being reported on by Kevin Iole as I type this. What a shitty thing to do to your fans Mirko. Promise us a return, a shot at the belt one last time, and then ditch. Well, if it’s true, you suck. Otherwise, I’m waiting to see how this plays out before I say much more on the subject.
3.) No big news from this event. Just more hype for UFC 100 and the fan expo. The fan expo looks like it could be a lot of damn fun. Seriously, if I had the cash I would be there. Damn, being a poor bum with shitty opinions sucks.
4.) I thought Marcus Davis would win his fight with Dan Hardy. Nope. Good fight though, really enjoyed it as both guys went all out. Dan looked big in there with Davis. He also has a good chin because Davis caught him a few times and he hung in there. I also thought Hardy came off humbled in the post fight with Rogan. He had a lot of respect for Davis and the fans.
5.) I really hate the euro cards because I have to turn off all of my digital connections to the outside world all day to keep the fights from getting spoiled by a damn twitter or dumb friends text. Mirko Wins… yeah, you fuckers.
6.) Ben Saunders didn’t look good tonight in his loss against Mike Swick. Mike just dominated the fight. Ben looked like a deer in headlights, lost. I can’t wait to see who they put Mike up against next.
7.) Caol Uno looked small in his fight with Spencer Fisher. Even with the slight size disadvantage, Uno was able to toss him around a bit. It was impressive to see. However it wasn’t enough to earn him the victory in a close fight. I hope we get to see Uno again though, I’ve always been a fan.
8.) Cain Velasquez won his fight with Kongo, but I’m still not all that impressed. He wasn’t horrible or anything like that, but I just don’t see him beating guys like Lesnar or Gonzaga with that kind of performance. I want to see him do better. I can see him improving and becoming a serious contender soon, so who’s next for him? Carwin? Dos Santos?
9.) There was a lot of blood on the mat before the UFC main card began, which means one of the dark matches was a bloody one. Unfortunately, this UFC had six fights scheduled and several went to a decision which left no time for the usual bone the UFC likes to throw us by showing an undercard fight. I will now have to do some reading on other sites to find out what happened. Damn it.
Ray Mercer Just KO’d Tim Sylvia’s Career

It’s over for Tim Sylvia. He just had his career KO’d by… well, I would blame Ray, but he didn’t book the fight. Yeah. I called this exactly. A huge risk for Tim for very little gain. What the hell was he thinking here? Kimbo, at least, ended up winning against Ray. What does this now say about Kimbo, if anything? Tim needs to take some time off to think about his fighting career. He came in at 310 pounds, which is pathetic.
Shane Carwin Just Clowned You
I don’t have any problems with Cain Velasquez’s “Brown Pride” tattoo. I think it’s silly, but to each his own. You make decisions and sometimes they’re not as good as you’d hoped. He likes it and ultimately that’s all that matters. But, this motivational poster was just too damn funny not to share. Hopefully, we’ll get to see these two fight sometime down the road. I have to pick Clownwin Carwin for the win, KO.
UFC 99 Presser in Germany
Just watched some clips from today’s press conference in Germany for the upcoming UFC 99. A few thoughts:
1.) The European head of the UFC is kind of bland and boring, a sharp contrast to Dana White. He came of nervous and stiff, reading from cards and carefully saying Kongo’s name. He was monotone and I kept having visions of… “Bueller?… Bueller?… Bueller?…”
2.) I like how Rich Franklin mentioned the bad press, basically calling them out. Now let’s hope everything goes as expected. The UFC doesn’t need anyone to fuck up here and go nut kicking crazy or choke hungry.
3.) I have a feeling UFC 99 isn’t going to sell well here in the states compared to previous events. It’s too bad really, because if there are a couple of fighters out there who deserve some support it’s Rich and Wanderlei. These two guys will likely bring it, and are both veterens looking to restablish themselves here. They could use their fan base right about now.
4.) Wanderlei speaking english is the best. You can tell this guy loves his fans and tries hard for them. Can’t wait for this fight myself.
5.) I think a 195 division that both Rich and Wanderlei mentioned is not a good idea. I will have more on that in an upcoming post. A lot to talk about here.
6.) Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?
7.) Why in the hell did Kongo keep giggling like a little girl?
8.) I don’t know, not much else to really discuss here. I thought it was a bit boring, but maybe they were trying to keep it toned down due to the bad press?
Quick Thoughts on Tonight’s Strikeforce Event
I thought tonight’s show was pretty good. Some good fights and the production was decent, for the most part. Frank Shamrock seemed to go a little crazy near the end, and a few odd moments here and there, but some of that should be expected. However, let’s get to the real thoughts…
1.) Brett Rogers. I picked him to win by KO, so this isn’t a surprise to me, but I didn’t think it would be that quickly. He did a great job tonight, and Strike Force has an interesting fighter here with him. Who will he fight next, Overeem or the winner of Fedor vs Barnett? I would like to see either one.
2.) It was interesting to see them go after the UFC just a bit tonight. Several times they took the opportunity to mention how Fedor has destroyed two recent UFC heavyweight champs and how one of them was fighting again tonight (only to be destroyed later by Brett). No big deal, and in the MMA business, the UFC has the target on their back because they are the big dog so it’s to be expected.
3.) Joe Riggs looked impressive tonight in his win. He was mixing it up and you could tell he brought a lot of emotion into this fight, especially in his post fight interview. Let’s see how his next few fights play out.
4.) Both Nick Diaz and Scott Smith are rarely ever in a boring fight these days. Both of these guys are real fighters and they know how to entertain. Their fight definitely stole the night, and it was the fight all of us here were looking forward to the most. I can’t wait to see both of them again, but I think Scott could use a break. Diaz is great fun and it makes me wonder… KJ Noons, what are you doing? Where have you gone? Any regrets?
5.) The Showtime/Strikeforce events are going to be pretty good. I’m looking forward to their shows and I have to say, the WEC just doesn’t seem to have that same momentum going for their events lately that Strikeforce has had. Maybe it’s just me…? WEC is great though, it just seems that ever since they were bought out by Zuffa, they’ve been shadowed by their big brother, the UFC. I hope Zuffa works on this some more because it still feels a bit odd.
6.) They didn’t push the Gina Carano/Cris Cyborg fight enough. I’m really looking forward to this fight, and they’re right, it will be the most anticipated women’s MMA fight ever, but they could of did a better job tonight with adverstising for it. And what’s next after this fight for the women? They need to work on that. Hopefully they will start the build up for this fight soon, they should be using every minute they have possible.
7.) Will a Mike Whitehead victory every be exciting? And Kevin Randleman’s better days are behind him. If we ever get to see him and Tito finally fight, I believe Tito will ruin him. I always thought it would be somewhat of a close fight, but not now.
8.) The main event of Lawler versus Shields was OK. Nothing special and very quick. I just wasn’t very excited for this fight in the first place so maybe it’s just me, but the rest of the card seemed to drown out the main event, at least in the lead up to the event itself.
UFC + Kimbo Slice + Undisputed = Money

Will the UFC sell a downloadable Kimbo character for their recent hit video game, Undisputed 2009? Probably, and it will be a few dollars for a download that I bet will come with another fighter they’re pushing (though it would be funny if he came with a Seth Petruzelli character). And this all means money in the bank with tons of new game buyers (and fans). More money for the UFC, in the end, means more money for fighters. And yes, I’m waiting to buy my Kimbo character, but I’m sure we will have to wait until the end of season 10 of TUF before we can get it.
